About Urban 20

Urban 20 (U20) is a global diplomatic initiative co-convened by C40 Cities and United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG). Each year, it is chaired by the G20 host city, spotlighting urban challenges and strengthening cities’ influence on the global agenda.

Since its launch in 2017, U20 has amplified urban priorities, proposed collective solutions, and shaped city-led contributions to the G20. Its core focus areas include climate action, sustainable development, inclusive growth, and access to finance in support of the SDGs.

The U20 Communiqué

The flagship outcome is the U20 Communiqué—an action-driven declaration of city recommendations, formally submitted to the G20 to ensure urban voices shape global policy.

Leading a Movement

Together, Johannesburg and Tshwane are more than U20 co-chairs—they are catalysts of a global movement redefining urban governance, championing inclusivity, and proving African cities are central to a resilient and sustainable future.

Why Tshwane and Johannesburg?

Johannesburg – South Africa’s economic powerhouse, driving smart city innovation, renewable energy, and social inclusion through its Growth and Development Strategy 2040. Tshwane – The nation’s administrative capital, known for good governance, infrastructure, and environmental leadership, pioneering green spaces and inclusive urban planning.
